Therapy Dogs, Area Search Dogs and Charity Events

We believe strongly in giving back to the community that has blessed us with their loyalty and with their testimonies that has allowed us to be in a position where we rarely have to advertise. We also have a very special spot in our hearts for children with special needs, our vets, and those that may need special assistance.  We take each situation into careful consideration.  Please enjoy the following testimonies from some of our charitable events and stories from our new owners' certified therapy dogs.

The beautiful story for how "Hope" brought hope to the Mercy Hallmar residential care facility in Cedar Rapids with our donation.

Stress Strikes Out: Meet the Hawkeye Softball Team's Canine Companion

In fall 2021, the Hawkeye softball team added a surprising new recruit. She doesn’t pitch, catch, or hit home runs. Instead, the rookie’s strengths include playing fetch and delivering lots of cuddles. She’s a petite goldendoodle named Mali, and as the first full-time therapy dog at the University of Iowa and in the Big Ten, she may be considered an adorable step forward for mental health support in college sports.Originally, Erin Doud-Johnson (01BA), Mali’s owner and a volunteer assistant coach for the team, suggested that a therapy dog could help student-athletes maintain their mental health while dealing with the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. Since joining the team, however, Mali has helped with a variety of other stresses too, including hitting slumps, school stress, and homesickness.

According to the team, she even senses what each student-athlete needs each day, whether that’s playtime at practice, support during a big game, or just some distance. “She has a personal relationship with every team member,” says Maggie Vasa, a Hawkeye infielder.

Finding Mali wasn’t a simple process. Doud-Johnson knew it was important to get a dog with the right temperament, so in April 2020 she adopted Mali from the Decorah, Iowa-based Kimberlee’s Kennels, a breeder known for dogs suited to therapy work.

Then, Mali and Doud-Johnson worked with a trainer for about a year and a half over Zoom to learn the skills the dog would need to support the team, such as staying calm and not getting distracted by hectic environments. The intensive process included nursing home visits to test her skills and a final certification examination by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Mali’s work doesn’t end with the softball team. Doud-Johnson and Mali plan to visit UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and share Meet Mali the Therapy Dog, the first book in a new series featuring the pooch. The rhyming picture book by Cedar Rapids author Mary Griffith Chalupsky tells the story of Mali’s journey to the softball team, and Doud-Johnson hopes children will benefit from Mali’s soothing presence as much as the Hawkeyes.

Doud-Johnson also hopes Mali’s example can serve as a catalyst for more therapy dogs in college sports. “I do think that if you looked at our teams in the past compared to where we are now, we’re much healthier,” she says. “For the student athletes, [she’s] a peace of mind.”

Gwen, Her son & Our Retired Calming Crystal

Standard F1 Goldendoodle

" Hi. I just wanted to let you know that Crystal has been the best thing for my 5 year old son with autism. She sleeps with him, eats with him, and follows him everywhere. It is like she just knows he needs her. When he is having a bad time, he will lay with her and hold her paw and tell her he loves her.  My family is so grateful for this dog. Thanks again and I hope all is well with you."

As a "Love on a Leash" pet therapy team.

"Ozzie and I are members of Love on a Leash pet therapy group.  Our volunteer visits include Mercy Mental Health adolescents and adults, Mercy CHI and University of Nebraska medical staff, the Children’s department of our local public library, destressing university students during finals week, nursing homes, and public school visits."We were part of Mercy/cHI Wellness Day. The staff loved interacting with Ozzie. It’s been such a stressful year for health care workers."

Nathan & Mocha: an unbreakable bond

The Andersen family picked up Mocha, a standard F1 bernedoodle puppy December 14th or 2021. Mocha is now in training to become a service dog for their son Nathan. We are beyond proud of both Nathan and Mocha and cannot wait to see what the future hold for them.

“She has been an absolute blessing to our family! Especially to our son Nathan. They are bonding with each other exactly like we had hoped! Mocha is the most gentle, loving, loyal, smart and crazy playful dog I (we) have ever owned! She has passed her basic obedience training with ease and is currently doing advanced obedience class which will lead into service dog training for Nathan!” ~Mike A.

Natalie Runge and Oliver Hero

"His name is Oliver Hero. I just wanted to thank you for this dog! He is incredible! He is what is called an Area Search Dog.   We volunteer for the Central Lakes Search and Rescue Unit.  He is certified in both area search and building searches.  He is super fast, so sometimes it is hard to get pictures of him while in active training. This guy is exceptionally unique and he does brilliant work!  He is from Jedi and Daisy's litter from 2021.  It typically takes a dog 2 years to certify and he did it in just 5 months!  He truly is a special dog and so amazing at his job!  He was going to be a therapy dog for my mental health practice, but I found he was super passionate about searching for people so we went that route instead.  I actually participated in cognition testing with him and his memory is so stellar that he ACED it!  I've done a lot of work with him to figure out what he is most passionate about and this is it!   I threw in a picture of his sister from the same litter.  She too is training as a service dog.   The two of them are best friends!"  - Natalie Runge.

Booker and Abby Randt

"Hi there! We have had Booker now since July and he’s about 6 months now. He a f1 standard English doodle from Pearl and Olaf I believe. We just absolutely love him and are so impressed with how smart and well mannered he is! He has even surprised us with his bird hunting skills!! We just wanted to give you guys some updated pictures 🥰 thank you for our dream dog! He’s really just the best dog for us, we can’t say enough good things about Kimberlee’s Kennels. I hope everyone can have a dog like Booker🥰Abby Randt."

Carol & Jerry Steffensmeier

"Sam became a registered therapy dog in October 2021 at the age of four.  He began by visiting hospital staff, and as covid -19 restrictions were lifted he started seeing patients.  Sam has the unique ability to match his energy level to those he interacts with.  He enjoys people of all ages from the tiniest toddler to the oldest grandma.  He makes sure to interact with everyone.  More than once we've been told that he "really knows how to work a room."  Currently, he is assigned to visit geriatric, adult, and child patients in the hospital's psychiatric units.  Sam has also visited with college students during finals' week, residents in the nursing homes, and recently helped "teach" a stress management class at the middle school.   Sam's hobby is chasing tennis balls and he can retrieve three at once!   He enjoys playing with his buddies at doggy day care, and playing ball with the kids next door.   In his spare time, he can be found at the front window watching the squirrels play, and keeping his family safe from the songbirds that visit his bird feeders."  - Carol Steffensmeier.

Fantastic Finley Sue!

Finley Sue is from Freya/Olaf and was born in Sept. 2021. Finley has been busy since she came home, and I wanted to share what she has been up to. Shortly after coming home, I realized that her (mostly) calm demeanor and love of all people would make her a great therapy dog.

We started training down that road and discovered the Canine Good Citizen titles and other obedience titles. While working toward a therapy dog test, Finley has received her Canine Good Citizen (CGC), CGCA (Advanced) and CGCU (Urban) titles. I also compete with Finley in both obedience and Rally. She has earned her Rally Novice and Intermediate titles along and is working toward her Advanced title. Finley was also invited to compete in the AKC Rally National Championship in April because she scored high earning her Rally titles.

In addition to all of that, we passed our Therapy Dog testing in December 2022 and have started volunteering at the local hospital. She is such a joy, and everyone is so impressed by how well behaved and calm she is. Also by how much she loves to snuggle up and get pets.

Many times at these competitions and during Therapy visits, Finley is the only Goldendoodle and I am constantly told how well behaved and pleasant she is to have around. Training aided in this, but I believe her natural demeanor from her breeding plays a big part. She is so gentle with everyone she meets especially kids.
