About Poodles

Royal Phantom Poodle

Poodles have earned their place in the world as they carry an air of dignity that is second to no other dog breed in all the world. A well bred poodle is similar to the Norwegian Draft horse in its stance and temperament. To be in the presence of an amazing temperament is something that can only be felt and not described with mere words.

Poodles come in three sizes: Toys, Miniatures and Standards. Toys are under 10 inches to the withers, miniatures are 10 to 14 inches to the withers, and standards are over 15 inches and up to 26 inches. In other countries they also recognize the size called Moyen or Klein, which is in the 20-30 pound range and should be 14 to 18 inches to the withers. Here at Kimberlee's Kennels we offer Standard and Miniatures currently and may have moyens in the future. We only offer 1 or 2 litters a year to replenish our own program and to sell to the 14 other breeders that I mentor. We do offer the remaining puppies as pets or approved breeders.

Grooming requirements: Poodles have a thick, curly coat that grows continuously. It is classified as a high maintenance coat that requires a skilled, professional groomer. It is quite a fantastic sight to behold to see a poodle in full glory. It is satisfying to express the coat in an artistic manner that will turn heads wherever the poodle goes. They require regular grooming every 6 to 8 weeks.

Intelligence and athleticism: Poodles are in the top 4 breeds for intelligence and for this reason alone they are a wonderful choice. They are very athletic and were originally used for hunting and sports. Well regarded for fishing, bird hunting and even participated in the Iditarod. We classify the poodle as strong in agility with a moderate to high need for exercise. Yet, in an in-house environment they know their place and are very well-mannered.

Health and life-span: The miniature poodle's lifespan is approximately 15 years and the standard poodle lifespan is 12 years. A well bred poodle should have their full genetic panels done testing for common diseases along with OFA hip and elbow certifications. It is a given that any poodle or dog should have good, firm patellas. We do test all of our breeding dogs and provide this service for you. Results are posted on our dame and sire pages.
